      We spotted this one and another not in the thick trees but on a lone tree about 100 feet east of the nest tree in the grasslands/wetlands.... I suspect they will be back to raise another bunch of owlets! We do have a cool Video of an owlet eating lunch from a year ago!!

      YES! The last couple of years they have nested in a tree snag that overhangs the auto route at the refuge. I have a video from last year of one of the cute owlets eating a meal on my feed. And videos of the Short Eared Owls too!!!

      @@Jonathan_and_Tammie ty, I'll try to view that when I get up. Long day and I'm 74 y/o, lol. I used to have very large owls 20 yrs ago, they got on my tool shed. It had a metal roof, or I don't think I would have heard them walking. They put up a loud hoot-fest. I loved hearing them. I had wild rabbits running around the pasture. They never harmed my cats.

    Amazing footage! That looks like a huge fish (for the bird! do you know what kind?) the bird caught! The fish was struggling, but the hungry Grebe managed to fully consume (alive?!) it all okay? It looked like the unlucky thing was still desperately kicking staring down that neck! I wonder, does the large fish stand any chance of escaping if eaten in that condition? Maybe it can turn around inside the elastic throat/stomach and has a chance of survival here.

      Hi Will! Thanks for the compliment! Video and image quality no match for yours but it is just a new hobby. We knew that these Owls were at this location. It is at a popular National Wildlife Refuge that has a 5km auto only route. The birds and deer are very used to the passing cars which work as blinds. We were parked on the route scouring the reeds for these Short Eared Owls whi roost in the reed clumps during the day. After not spotting any for 20 miniutes, we look across the road and see one 2 meters from the road watching us (and the Bald Eagles flying overhead). We watched it roost for a few then moved on. They start hunting for little furry creatures about sunset over the short grass fields and dikes. They compete directly with the Northern Harriers (there is a blurry one in the background of one of the perched shots). The birds in the background are Canada Geese, a very common migratory large flocking goose that all fly when a Bald Eagke flies over. We went back on Monday and it looks like the owls cleared out the little furry animal population and migrated north. We saw only a couple Harriers and Great Blue Herons who also feed on them. The trip was still worth while as we did get a fun video of a Great Horned Owlet who is nested in a snag directly above the road.... we will be posting.

    • @Jonathan_and_Tammie
      @Jonathan_and_Tammie Рік тому

      We did ask if you had any experiences with Thermal Vision... slightly different than IR and possibly usable in daylight animal spotting... but we dont have one. (Yet?)

      The fields and skies are filled with Canada Geese for the winter. They mostly will fly north up to Alaska in a few weeks! Many of these Owls will also migrate North very soon!

Check ✅ out my channel and see me summoning him with a series of whistles. Talking now as well. Shy tho only talks when hidden. Experience and Blessing of my lifetime!
